Job Description, Duties, Interview Questions and Salary for Pool Life Guard

As a Pool Life Guard, your primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of all swimmers in and around the pool area. You will be expected to maintain constant watch over all activities in the pool, and respond quickly to any emergency situations that may arise.

In addition to your lifesaving duties, you will also be responsible for ensuring that the pool area is clean and well-maintained at all times. This includes performing routine cleaning tasks such as skimming the pool, checking the chemical levels, and maintaining the pool deck and surrounding areas.

To be successful in this role, you must possess excellent communication skills, as you will be interacting with a wide variety of people on a daily basis. You must also have a strong attention to detail, as even the smallest oversight could have serious consequences in a pool environment.

Additionally welcome Guests to the pool facility and always be courteous and friendly to guests, be attentive to their needs, professionally handle problems, and are conscious of the importance of safety.

Life Guard Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure Guests are aware of all services and activities available at the pool.
  •  Ensure that proper pool testing has taken place before Guests use the facility.
  •  Ensure all Guests are registered before using the pool and are aware of the rules and regulations of the facility.
  •  Makes sure the swimming pool is clean and constantly monitors swimming pool activity.
  •  To have required knowledge of SPA / Health club facilities along with their prices and also know about membership procedures.
  •  Ensure the sun loungers are clean, umbrellas are in working shape and, in the correct position and proper working condition.
  •  Ensures that the umbrellas are fixed properly to their units and ensures that when the umbrellas are not in use, they are tidied down for safety precautions.
  •  Explain to the guests about the services and activities available at the pool.
  •  Use appropriate rescue techniques if observing swimmers in need of assistance.
  •  Observe the swimming area for dangerous conditions, unusual or unsafe activities, and swimmers who are struggling.
  •  Caution swimmers regarding unsafe areas.
  •  Restrict guests from using any kind of glassware near the pool area. 
  •  Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and administer first aid.
  •  Provide swimming lessons and training when requested by the guest.
  •  Be aware of possible situations where guests are not able to safely participate in an activity and inform the supervisor/manager.
  •  To regularly check the temperature of the pool to ensure they are at set standard.
  •  Assist in the cleanliness and the daily upkeep of the pool area.
  •  Consistently offer professional, friendly, and engaging service.
  •  Provide a high level of Guest satisfaction and safety through effective communication.
  •  Report accidents, injuries, and unsafe work conditions to the manager attend and complete safety training and certifications as required by the management.
  •  Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  •  Follow company policies and procedures at all times and proper grooming and personal appearance to be maintained.

Prerequisites:

Physically fit and able to work long hours in an outside environment are essentials. A good command of English and good interpersonal abilities are an advantage. 

Education:

Qualified with lifeguard and first aid certificate, Excellent swimmer with Basic Schooling. To have worked in hotels before as a lifeguard Skills and Knowledge. Good oral and written communication skills in English with basic computer operation skills.

Experience:

1 to 2 years of hotel or club experience as a lifeguard.

    • Evaluates the candidate’s ability to enforce rules and maintain a safe pool environment.
  4. What measures do you take to prevent accidents or injuries at the pool, and how do you promote a culture of safety among pool users?
    • Assesses the candidate’s proactive approach to preventing incidents and their communication skills.
  5. Have you worked with children or organized pool activities and swimming lessons? How do you ensure the safety and engagement of participants?
    • This question evaluates the candidate’s experience with different age groups and their ability to conduct swimming lessons.
  6. How do you stay vigilant during long hours on duty, and what strategies do you use to avoid complacency in your lifeguarding duties?
    • Assesses the candidate’s attentiveness and dedication to maintaining a high level of alertness.
  7. What communication tools or protocols have you used to coordinate with other lifeguards and pool staff, especially during crowded or busy periods?
    • Knowledge of communication systems is important. This question helps gauge the candidate’s teamwork and coordination skills.
  8. How do you handle conflicts or disputes among pool users, and what steps do you take to de-escalate tense situations?
    • Assesses the candidate’s conflict resolution skills and ability to maintain a calm environment.
